Assignment:

Take on a community organization as a client to help them fill any needs they might have in the design space.

Process:

The community organization I reached out to for this project was Harvest Manitoba. They are a non-profit that feeds 90,000 Manitobans a month, sharing 12,000,000 ibs of food each year. They’re also focused on advocacy work and providing long term solutions.

I worked directly with the Education Coordinator to determine their design needs. What they needed most was welcome signage for their community gardens, and a flyer design for their “Grow-A-Row” Program. The Grow-A-Row program provides a space for people who like to garden to donate a portion of their harvest to Harvest Manitoba. The flyer needed to advertise the program and give some information on how to get involved.

The tone of voice we decided on was friendly, welcoming, inclusive and fun. They also had specific colours and fonts on their website that I needed to use. Both the flyer and signage needed to look like they went together. I started with some sketches for both projects, made the text layout and then fleshed out the sketches a bit more. The final illustrations are vibrant and eye catching, with easy to read and concise content. I consulted with the Education Coordinator throughout the process to make sure everything was approved. All illustration work was made in Procreate, and the text layouts were done in InDesign.
